Google offers Nigerian students 12 months of free AI Plus subscription.

Google is giving eligible Nigerian students 12 months of free access to Google AI Plus, opening up its paid AI tools to students as the new academic year begins.

The offer is available to students aged 18 and above enrolled in accredited Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. The subscription is valued at ₦92,400 and is part of Google’s Gemini Student Offer, which is also available across 27 other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Students who benefited from the offer last year can also renew their access by verifying their current student status.

What students get with Google AI Plus

The subscription gives students access to several AI-powered learning and productivity tools, including Deep Research, Gemini Live, custom practice quizzes and unlimited file uploads.

Students also receive 400GB of cloud storage and access to Gemini Study Notebooks, which can turn lecture notes and other learning materials into quizzes and study plans.

Google Lens can also help students understand equations, diagrams and other visual materials by providing step-by-step explanations.

For students working on research papers and final-year projects, Deep Research can help organise information and explore topics more efficiently, although students are still expected to verify sources and complete their academic work themselves.

Google wants Gemini to become a learning partner

Google is also positioning Gemini as more than an AI tool that simply provides answers.

Its Guided Learning feature is designed to encourage students to understand concepts by asking questions, providing hints and guiding them through problems rather than immediately giving them solutions.

A Google study involving 1,763 students in West Africa found that students using Guided Learning experienced significant learning progress over an eight-week period.

The approach reflects a wider shift in how technology companies are trying to integrate AI into education — moving from simple answer generation towards tools that support learning and problem-solving.

How Nigerian students can claim the offer

Eligible students can access the offer through Google’s Gemini student offer page and complete student verification through SheerID.

Students will need to confirm that they are currently enrolled in an eligible Nigerian institution and may be required to provide proof of enrollment.

Once verified, they can activate their Google AI Plus subscription and begin using the available tools.

For Nigerian students, the offer could make advanced AI-powered research, learning and productivity tools more accessible without the cost of a paid subscription.
