The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has called on the Nigerian Army to make greater use of data and artificial intelligence (AI) as strategic tools for modernising military operations.
NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi made the call at the Nigerian Army’s 4th Data Management and Record-Keeping Seminar 2026 in Abuja, themed “From Data to Decision Advantage: Digital Transformation, Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Warfare.”
Abdullahi said the military should move beyond treating data management as an administrative record-keeping function and instead use data to support intelligence gathering, operational planning and decision-making.
He also encouraged the Army to integrate AI into both strategic and tactical operations, arguing that AI-powered analysis can help improve the speed, accuracy and effectiveness of military decisions.
NITDA further highlighted the importance of developing dedicated digital infrastructure and data centres for defence operations, alongside strengthening the digital skills of military personnel.
The push reflects the growing role of digital technologies in modern defence, where the ability to collect, analyse and turn data into actionable intelligence is becoming increasingly important to operational readiness and strategic advantage.
