Cybastion Plans $75 Million AI-Powered Data Centre and Power Plant in Cameroon

U.S.-based technology company Cybastion has announced plans to invest $75 million in an artificial intelligence-powered data centre and power plant in Cameroon, signalling a significant new investment in the country’s digital and energy infrastructure.

The planned project was announced during the inaugural U.S.-Cameroon Bilateral Economic and Commercial Dialogue, held in Douala on August 27. According to the announcement, the investment forms part of a broader pipeline of $7 billion in new and expanding American investment and trade opportunities in Cameroon.

The proposed development combines two increasingly interconnected components of the digital economy: computing infrastructure and reliable energy. AI-powered data centres require substantial and consistent electricity supplies, making energy infrastructure an important consideration as African countries seek to expand their capacity for advanced digital services.

Ahead of the bilateral dialogue, Cybastion’s Senior Director of Infrastructure Solutions, Daniel Epee Lea, moderated a high-level discussion involving government and private-sector representatives on Cameroon’s digital economy and investment environment. The discussions explored opportunities and challenges related to digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, digital transformation and artificial intelligence.

The investment could strengthen Cameroon’s ambitions to expand its technology infrastructure while positioning the country to participate more actively in Africa’s growing demand for data storage and AI computing capacity.

As the continent’s digital economy continues to evolve, investments that address both computing capacity and the energy required to support it could become increasingly important. Cybastion’s proposed project reflects the growing recognition that Africa’s AI ambitions will depend not only on software and talent but also on the physical infrastructure needed to power the technologies of the future.
