Huawei and MTN Group have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at accelerating the deployment of AI-driven intelligent networks across Africa, marking another step in the continent’s digital transformation. The agreement was announced during Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2026, one of the world’s largest telecom industry events.
The partnership focuses on advancing next-generation telecom infrastructure powered by artificial intelligence, with both companies collaborating to improve network performance, expand connectivity, and unlock new digital services across MTN’s markets in Africa.
AI at the Core of Africa’s Telecom Evolution
Under the agreement, Huawei and MTN plan to integrate AI into network planning, deployment, and operations, enabling telecom systems that are more autonomous and efficient. The collaboration aims to support the evolution toward Autonomous Networks Level 4 (AN L4), a technology standard that allows telecom networks to automatically monitor, optimize, and repair themselves with minimal human intervention.
By leveraging artificial intelligence, the two companies hope to build what they describe as a next-generation intelligent network architecture, including emerging models such as agentic networks, which combine AI systems with telecom infrastructure to automate decision-making and service optimization.
Expanding Broadband and Closing Africa’s Digital Divide
A major objective of the partnership is to address Africa’s persistent connectivity gaps, particularly in rural and underserved regions. The companies plan to explore cost-efficient network solutions that can expand coverage and make digital services more accessible across the continent.
The MoU also highlights several key focus areas:
- Home broadband expansion through technologies such as Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)
- AI-driven network operations and maintenance to improve service reliability and reduce operating costs
- Data monetization models powered by AI analytics
- Development of AI-ready digital infrastructure, including data centers and fiber networks
Strengthening Africa’s Digital Economy
Industry leaders say the collaboration could play a significant role in accelerating Africa’s digital and intelligent transformation, as telecom operators increasingly rely on AI to improve network efficiency and create new revenue streams.
MTN, one of Africa’s largest telecom operators, has been expanding its focus on AI-enabled connectivity and digital services as part of its broader strategy to transition from a traditional telecom provider to a technology platform supporting the continent’s digital economy.
As demand for data, cloud services, and digital platforms continues to rise across Africa, partnerships like the Huawei-MTN agreement highlight the growing role of AI-powered telecom infrastructure in shaping the future of connectivity across the continent.
