Nigeria’s NDPC and NBC Partner to Strengthen Data Protection and Digital Broadcasting Standards

Nigeria’s digital governance landscape received a boost as the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening data protection, privacy governance, and regulatory collaboration across the country’s digital and broadcasting sectors.

The agreement formalizes cooperation between both agencies as Nigeria continues to expand its digital economy and navigate growing concerns around data privacy, content regulation, and responsible data usage.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration in advancing privacy protection and improving data governance across multiple sectors of the economy.

According to Olatunji, stronger data protection frameworks are essential to building public trust in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital ecosystem. He noted that the partnership aligns with broader national efforts to support digital transformation and economic development under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

NBC Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Charles Ebuebu, described the collaboration as a significant step toward modernizing broadcasting regulation in an increasingly data-driven environment. He highlighted the growing influence of algorithms, streaming platforms, and digital content services in shaping how audiences consume media, making data governance a critical component of effective regulation.

Ebuebu further stated that the partnership would help the NBC strengthen oversight of Nigeria’s broadcasting industry while aligning regulatory practices with global standards for digital privacy and responsible data management.

As part of the agreement, both agencies have established a joint working group that will oversee the implementation of the MoU and coordinate collaborative initiatives focused on data protection, privacy awareness, and regulatory compliance.

The partnership reflects a broader trend among Nigerian regulatory institutions seeking closer cooperation to address emerging challenges in the digital economy. As technology adoption accelerates across industries, the NDPC-NBC collaboration is expected to play a key role in promoting responsible data governance and enhancing confidence in Nigeria’s digital future.
