MTN Ghana is stepping up its investment in Ghana’s digital infrastructure after securing new spectrum licences in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands for 5G and mobile broadband services.
The licences, awarded by Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA), are valid for 15 years and carry a combined value of approximately $202 million.
Under the award, MTN Ghana will receive two 20 MHz lots in the 700 MHz band for $100.9 million, alongside a 150 MHz block in the 3 GHz band for $101.1 million.
The investment is expected to strengthen MTN Ghana’s network capacity and improve service quality as demand for mobile data and high-speed connectivity continues to grow.
The company plans to deploy the new spectrum alongside its existing holdings, supporting the expansion of 5G mobile services as well as its ambitions to provide high-speed broadband connectivity to more homes across Ghana.
MTN Ghana is currently completing the required formalities and payment obligations before the licences are formally issued. The company said the licence payments have already been incorporated into its equity free cash flow outlook.
The development also comes as Ghana’s 5G market becomes more competitive, following regulatory changes that have opened the market to multiple operators. Telecel Ghana is also preparing to launch its own 5G service, reportedly targeting December 2026.
For MTN Ghana, the new spectrum represents more than additional network capacity. It is a strategic investment aimed at expanding 5G adoption, improving connectivity and positioning the company for the next phase of Ghana’s digital economy.
