SABC Appoints Dr. Vuyo Nyembezi as Group Executive for Technology

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has appointed Dr. Vuyo Nyembezi as its new Group Executive for Technology, strengthening the broadcaster’s leadership as it accelerates its digital transformation and technology modernization strategy.

Dr. Nyembezi brings more than 20 years of experience in broadcasting and operational technology, making him one of the most experienced technology executives within the SABC. Over the years, he has held several leadership positions across the broadcaster, contributing to infrastructure modernization, operational efficiency, technology innovation, and strategic digital development.

Before his permanent appointment, he served in the role in an acting capacity during a critical phase of the SABC’s digital transformation journey, where he played a key role in advancing the corporation’s technology and streaming ambitions.

He is widely recognized for helping drive the expansion of SABC Plus and supporting the broadcaster’s transition toward a digitally enabled broadcasting model. His work has included integrating AI-driven technologies, improving platform accessibility, and developing data-light digital solutions aimed at reaching underserved audiences across South Africa.

At the 2026 Microsoft AI Tour Johannesburg, Dr. Nyembezi highlighted plans to scale SABC Plus using artificial intelligence, gamification, and zero-rated content to make public broadcasting more accessible and interactive for millions of viewers. Under his technology leadership, the platform reportedly achieved 99% availability while preparing for significant audience growth.

Beyond operations, Dr. Nyembezi has also emerged as a respected voice on the future of African broadcasting, speaking extensively about AI, streaming platforms, mobile-first media, podcasts, and personalized digital experiences. He has consistently emphasized the importance of combining technology innovation with accessibility and local storytelling.

Academically, Dr. Nyembezi holds a PhD in Business Management, an MBA, and additional executive qualifications focused on innovation, strategy, and broadcast management.

The SABC said his appointment reflects the corporation’s commitment to innovation, operational excellence, and building a future-ready public broadcaster capable of adapting to the rapidly evolving digital media landscape.
