Senate Confirms New NCC Board to Bolster Oversight and Drive Nigeria’s Telecom Growth.

In a move signaling renewed momentum for Nigeria’s digital economy, the Senate has confirmed the appointment of a new board for the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The confirmation follows a successful screening by the Senate Committee on Communications, solidifying the leadership structure of one of Nigeria’s most strategic regulatory bodies.

Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe, representing the South West, emerged as the new Chairman of the NCC Board after his confirmation during Tuesday’s plenary session. He joins an experienced team that includes Non-Executive Commissioners Maryam Bayi (North East), Senator Ramoni Olalekan Mustafa (South West), Ikechukwu Ugwuegede (South East), Princess Oforitsenere Emiko, and Christopher Sandy Okorie (both South South). The Senate also reaffirmed the executive team led by Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, alongside Engineer Abraham Oshadami and Rimini H. Makama.

The reconstituted board takes charge at a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s telecom sector, a sector that contributes over 14% to the nation’s GDP and boasts more than 220 million active mobile subscriptions. Their mandate extends beyond maintaining regulatory stability; it includes deepening broadband penetration, advancing 5G deployment, strengthening cybersecurity, and improving consumer protection.

Industry observers have hailed the appointments as a strategic step toward ensuring continuity, innovation, and accountability in the NCC’s operations. The board’s composition reflects a balance of regional representation and technical expertise, setting the stage for stronger governance and more coherent telecom policy implementation.

As Nigeria accelerates toward a more connected and digitally inclusive economy, the new NCC leadership is expected to reinforce transparency, foster innovation, and position the nation’s telecom sector for sustained global competitiveness.
