MTN Uganda Strengthens Board with Telecom Veteran Ebenezer Asante

MTN Uganda has appointed Ebenezer Asante as a Non-Executive Director, bringing one of Africa’s most experienced telecommunications executives into the company’s boardroom as the operator looks to deepen its growth strategy across East Africa.

Asante currently serves as Senior Vice President for Southern & East Africa, Ghana and Sudan (SEAGHAS) at MTN Group, where he oversees operations across several key African markets with direct responsibility for regional performance, strategy execution, and operational growth.

His appointment adds decades of executive leadership experience to MTN Uganda’s board. Before assuming his current regional role, Asante served as Vice President for MTN’s West and Central Africa region and later led the Southern and East Africa and Ghana portfolio between 2017 and 2020. In those positions, he played a central role in coordinating market expansion, operational efficiency, and digital transformation strategies across multiple countries.

Asante is also widely recognized for his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana and MTN Rwanda. During his leadership, both operations recorded strong financial and operational performance while expanding customer reach and strengthening market competitiveness. MTN noted that his leadership style emphasized talent development, people-focused management, and sustainable business growth.

Before joining the telecom industry, Asante built his corporate management career at Unilever, where he held senior positions in commercial operations and general management across several international markets. His experience there helped shape his expertise in organizational transformation, leadership development, and large-scale business operations.

Academically, Asante holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Statistics from the University of Ghana and a Management Diploma from Henley Management College in the United Kingdom. MTN Uganda’s Board said it believes Asante’s experience in governance, telecommunications, and regional market leadership will strengthen the company’s oversight capacity and contribute to its long-term strategic ambitions.
