MTN Nigeria has partnered with cybersecurity firm Whalebone to expand its portfolio of value-added services with the launch of Webguard, a network-level security solution designed to protect customers from phishing attacks, malicious websites, and online scams without requiring additional software or applications.
The initiative comes as Nigeria and the wider Middle East and Africa (MEA) region experience rapid digital growth, fuelled by rising smartphone adoption, expanding mobile broadband access, and increased reliance on digital services such as mobile banking, e-commerce, and government platforms. While these developments have accelerated digital inclusion, they have also heightened exposure to cyber threats.
Unlike conventional security applications that must be installed on individual devices, Webguard operates directly at the Domain Name System (DNS) level, automatically blocking malicious websites and phishing attempts before they reach users. The service works across all devices connected to a subscriber’s mobile plan without consuming storage space or affecting battery life.
According to MTN Nigeria, the partnership aims to make cybersecurity more accessible by embedding protection directly into its mobile network, removing technical barriers that often prevent consumers from adopting dedicated security tools.
The collaboration also represents a strategic opportunity for MTN to diversify its digital offerings beyond connectivity while strengthening customer trust through enhanced online safety. For Whalebone, the partnership marks a significant step in expanding network-level cybersecurity solutions across Africa’s rapidly evolving telecommunications market.
Beyond the product launch, both companies describe the agreement as a long-term strategic partnership. Whalebone will provide ongoing technical support, threat intelligence updates, performance optimisation, and go-to-market assistance to ensure the service evolves alongside emerging cyber risks.
As cybercrime continues to grow in sophistication, the partnership reflects a broader shift among telecommunications operators toward integrating security directly into network infrastructure, offering consumers seamless protection while creating new revenue opportunities through value-added digital services.
