Nigeria’s digital economy is about to witness a major transformation as Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX) the world’s leading digital infrastructure company announces the opening of its new high-performance data center in Lagos. Valued at $22 million, the facility, known as LG3, represents the first phase of a broader $100 million investment plan designed to revolutionize Africa’s digital landscape over the next two years. Set to launch in the first quarter of 2026, LG3 is expected to empower local businesses, attract global investors, and strengthen Lagos’s position as a hub for international connectivity.
Equinix’s investment underscores the growing recognition of Nigeria as a leading player in Africa’s tech ecosystem. As the second-largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria boasts a youthful, tech-savvy population and an energetic startup scene. Lagos, in particular, is the heartbeat of this evolution, standing tall as the only African city listed among the Global Top 100 Startup Ecosystems. The new LG3 data center will play a critical role in supporting this growth, offering advanced infrastructure that allows companies to scale quickly and securely. Within this facility, Equinix Fabric, the company’s interconnection service, will enable Nigerian enterprises to connect securely with global cloud providers, partners, and businesses across other Equinix locations worldwide. This creates a seamless bridge between Africa’s growing digital economy and the international marketplace, driving innovation, financial inclusion, and cross-border trade opportunities.
Speaking on the development, Wole Abu, Managing Director for West Africa at Equinix, expressed excitement about the milestone: “LG3 marks a significant milestone in Equinix’s long-term commitment to bridging Africa’s digital divide. As Lagos emerges at the crossroads of talent, innovation, and global connectivity, this facility is accelerating access to technologies like cloud, AI, and the next wave of startups. We’re not just building data centers, we’re fostering growth, empowering innovation, and laying the groundwork for an interconnected African economy ready to lead on the global stage.”
From a business standpoint, this expansion means more than infrastructure, it’s a new gateway for African entrepreneurs to thrive in the global digital economy. According to Olawale Owoeye, Managing Director at Cedarview, “Equinix’s Lagos data center will provide us with the robust and resilient platform our customers demand to expand our digital footprint. The unparalleled reliability and access to a global ecosystem empower us to deliver high-performance solutions, and LG3 is a key step in ensuring we remain at the forefront of businesses connecting Africa.”
Beyond strengthening Nigeria’s connectivity, Equinix’s entry highlights Africa’s growing importance in the global technology supply chain. Aslıhan Güreşcier, vice president for EMEA growth and emerging markets at Equinix, noted that Africa’s rapid digital transformation is being driven by “a young population, rising internet access, and increasing demand for secure data infrastructure.” She added that the Lagos center will support growth across sectors such as banking, education, emergency services, and commerce, ensuring the continent remains digitally competitive.
Since entering Africa in 2022, Equinix has steadily expanded its presence in Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and South Africa, strengthening its mission to deliver sustainable, carrier-neutral infrastructure that connects Africa with the rest of the global economy. With over 270 data centers worldwide, the company continues to harness Nigeria’s strategic role as a hub for subsea cable connections linking Africa to Europe, Asia, and beyond. In a region where data reliability and accessibility remain challenges, Equinix’s commitment to sustainability and efficiency positions it as a catalyst for progress. The LG3 facility in Lagos is not just a building, it is a symbol of Africa’s readiness for the digital era, a space where innovation meets opportunity, and where Nigerian talent can truly connect with the world.
