In a move that blends technology, culture, and education, Google has partnered with Slum2School Africa to launch Stories from Our Home, a culturally rooted coloring book designed for children in underserved Nigerian communities.
The initiative targets a critical gap in early childhood education limited access to creative learning materials by distributing 1,000 copies of the book to primary school pupils. For many of these children, basic tools like coloring books and crayons remain scarce, making this intervention both timely and impactful.
AI Meets Cultural Storytelling.
At the heart of the project is Google Gemini, which was used to transform traditional African folktales into print-ready illustrations. The process brought together a group of Nigerian creatives, including Broda Shaggi, Falz, and Layi Wasabi, who contributed stories and cultural insights during an Imagination Workshop.
These narratives were reinterpreted through generative AI into engaging line art, allowing children not only to read but also interact creatively with stories rooted in their heritage. The final book was produced by Inked Memory, ensuring it met child-friendly and educational standards.
Bridging Education And Identity.
For Otto Orondaam, the initiative extends beyond literacy. He emphasized that education begins with the stories children encounter and the cultural identity they develop early in life.
By embedding local folklore into learning materials, the project reinforces a sense of belonging and pride—an often overlooked dimension of education in underserved communities.
A Community-Centered Rollout.
The book was officially unveiled at the Slum2School Innovation Hub in Lekki, where children participated in live reading sessions led by notable figures, including Olumide Balogun, Nancy Isime, and Bisola Aiyeola.
Through stories highlighting Nigerian heritage such as the historic Walls of Benin and the legend of Queen Moremi these sessions aimed to reinforce cultural pride while making learning interactive and engaging.
Each participating child received a “Dream Pack” containing the coloring book, crayons, notebooks, pencils, and educational games, reinforcing the role of creative play in developing cognitive and motor skills.
Scaling Impact Through Creative Innovation.
This collaboration underscores a broader trend: the application of AI in education, not just as a productivity tool but as a cultural preservation medium. By combining technology with storytelling, Google and Slum2School are demonstrating how innovation can address systemic gaps in education while preserving local narratives.
For contributors like Broda Shaggi, the initiative carries personal significance, reflecting a commitment to ensuring that future generations have access to resources he once lacked. More broadly, it signals how cross-sector partnerships can deliver scalable, culturally relevant solutions in Africa’s education landscape.
