Cassava Technologies, the pan-African tech and telecom powerhouse, has introduced a groundbreaking platform Africa’s first Artificial Intelligence Multi-Model Exchange (CAIMEx) designed to connect the continent’s mobile network operators directly with leading AI systems from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
Through CAIMEx, African telecom operators can access multiple AI and large language models via a single interface, eliminating the need for costly infrastructure and complex integrations. The platform will be managed locally and hosted in regional data facilities to ensure data sovereignty and compliance with local protection standards, a critical move for Africa’s emerging digital economy.
“With its growing AI ecosystem, Africa has the potential to be more than a consumer of technologies imported from elsewhere,” said Ahmed El Beheiry, CEO of Cassava AI. “Through CAIMEx, we’re building a bridge between global innovation and African ambition, giving every mobile operator the ability to offer world-class AI tools affordably.”
This milestone aligns with Cassava’s broader ambition to strengthen Africa’s digital backbone and deepen its participation in global technology value chains. Earlier this year, U.S. chipmaker NVIDIA invested an undisclosed sum in Cassava to bolster its operations across Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. The investment also supports the company’s development of Africa’s first AI factory, announced by billionaire founder Strive Masiyiwa in March.
In a related development, Google has partnered with Cassava to integrate its Gemini AI tools across Africa, offering six months of free Google AI Plus and 200GB of cloud storage to eligible users. This collaboration will bring powerful generative AI capabilities to millions of Africans, even enabling data-free access for select participants.
CAIMEx supports a range of large language models, including Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini, allowing telecom operators to tailor AI solutions for customers and enterprises. Cassava’s regional AI factories ensure high-performance computing, robust data security, and adherence to local regulations key components for scaling digital transformation.
By launching CAIMEx, Cassava positions itself as a leader in Africa’s AI and data infrastructure movement, driving innovation while ensuring that advanced technologies are accessible and relevant to local markets. The initiative underscores Cassava’s commitment to closing the digital divide and transforming Africa into an active participant in the global AI revolution.
