OPay Debunks Account Number Rumour, Warns of Possible Legal Action.

OPay has denied claims circulating on social media that it has stopped using customers’ phone numbers as wallet account numbers and is requiring users to visit agents to obtain new account details.

The fintech addressed the claim after a post on X suggested that customers could no longer use their phone numbers as wallet identifiers.

OPay: Phone numbers are still valid wallet account numbers

According to OPay, the claim is false.

The company confirmed that customers can continue using their phone numbers as wallet account numbers and do not need to visit an OPay agent to change or update their accounts.

OPay also contacted the user behind the post and requested that the claim be removed within 30 minutes, stressing that inaccurate information about financial services can create confusion for customers and potentially damage the company’s reputation.

The fintech warned that it may pursue legal action if the post is not taken down.

Another misinformation challenge for OPay

The latest incident comes weeks after OPay faced another wave of misinformation over claims that it was shutting down its Nigerian operations.

In that case, the Nigeria Police Force’s National Cybercrime Centre arrested a woman following an investigation into a fake document alleging that OPay would discontinue its services.

The document reportedly spread rapidly on social media, receiving more than 572,000 views within minutes and encouraging users to withdraw their funds from the platform.

OPay subsequently took action against individuals who shared the shutdown claims, demanding that the posts be removed and that apologies be issued.

OPay urges customers to verify information

The latest account-number claim is separate from the previous shutdown rumours, but it highlights a similar challenge for financial technology companies operating in an increasingly social-media-driven environment.

For now, OPay says there has been no change to its use of customers’ phone numbers as wallet account numbers.

The company is encouraging customers to rely on its official communication channels for updates about their accounts and services rather than acting on unverified information shared online.

For users, the message is straightforward: when the information concerns your money, verify it before taking action.
