Safaricom Wins IT Risk Trailblazer Award for Cybersecurity and Risk Management

Safaricom has been recognised for its cybersecurity and enterprise risk management efforts after winning the IT Risk Trailblazer Corporate Award from the ISACA Kenya Chapter.

The award recognises Safaricom’s approach to governance, cybersecurity, fraud prevention and enterprise risk management across the M-PESA ecosystem and its broader operations.

The recognition comes as digital financial services continue to expand across Africa, increasing the importance of protecting customers, transactions and digital infrastructure from cyber threats.

Safaricom says its security framework includes a 24/7 Security Operations Centre, AI-powered threat detection and KingaSphere, its in-house Cyber Threat Intelligence platform. The company also uses measures such as Hakikisha and biometric authentication on My OneApp to strengthen the security of customer transactions.

According to the company, its security framework is also supported by internationally certified standards and board-level governance. Safaricom serves more than 50 million customers across its markets, making cybersecurity a critical component of maintaining trust in its digital and financial services.

The award highlights a broader shift in Africa’s digital economy: as mobile money, fintech and digital services become more deeply integrated into everyday economic activity, cybersecurity is increasingly becoming a core business and financial infrastructure issue—not simply an IT concern.
