Nigeria Launches FreeTV, Nationwide Subscription-Free Digital Television Platform

Nigeria has officially launched FreeTV, a nationwide digital television platform that offers households access to free-to-air digital broadcasting without monthly subscription fees, marking a major milestone in the country’s long-running Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme.

The platform, unveiled on June 17, 2026, is designed to expand access to quality television content across the country while accelerating Nigeria’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting. According to the Presidency, FreeTV forms part of the Federal Government’s broader agenda to promote digital inclusion, support local content development, and improve access to information and entertainment through technology.

FreeTV will provide viewers with access to more than 100 channels spanning news, sports, education, entertainment, children’s programming, and indigenous-language content. The service is expected to significantly increase media accessibility, particularly in underserved communities where access to paid television services remains limited.

The initiative is powered through Nigeria’s Digital Switch-Over programme, a project aimed at modernising the nation’s broadcasting infrastructure and aligning it with global digital broadcasting standards. Government officials have stated that the migration to digital broadcasting will improve picture and sound quality, enhance content distribution, and create new opportunities for advertisers, broadcasters, and content creators.

Industry stakeholders also expect the platform to stimulate growth in Nigeria’s creative economy by providing additional channels for local producers and independent content creators. Reports indicate that a substantial portion of available channel space will be reserved for regional and independent programming, helping to showcase diverse Nigerian stories and cultures.

As Nigeria continues its digital broadcasting transition, FreeTV is positioned as a key tool for expanding access to information, fostering media innovation, and delivering affordable entertainment to millions of households nationwide.
