WhatsApp Introduces Direct iPad Sign-Up Without Requiring Phone Linking.

WhatsApp has introduced a major update that allows users to create and register an account directly on an iPad, eliminating the previous requirement to first link the device to an existing smartphone account.

The feature is part of Meta’s broader effort to make WhatsApp a truly multi-device messaging platform while improving the user experience across Apple’s ecosystem.

Users Can Now Sign Up Directly on iPad

In a blog post announcing the update, WhatsApp said users have consistently requested the ability to register directly from an iPad without treating it as a companion device.

With the latest update, new users can now download WhatsApp on an iPad, register using their phone number, verify their account with a one-time passcode (OTP), and begin using the app independently.

Previously, WhatsApp on iPad required users to scan a QR code from an already active smartphone account before gaining access.

While a phone number is still required to receive the verification code, the iPad no longer depends on a primary smartphone after setup, giving users a standalone WhatsApp experience.

Expanding WhatsApp Beyond Smartphones

The update builds on the launch of WhatsApp for iPad in 2025, further advancing Meta’s vision of enabling seamless communication across multiple devices.

According to the company, the goal is to ensure WhatsApp works naturally wherever users are, regardless of the device they choose.

The move is expected to improve accessibility for users who rely heavily on tablets for work, education, and everyday communication.

More Features Arrive Across WhatsApp

Alongside direct iPad registration, WhatsApp also announced several new features designed to improve content sharing and productivity.

Users can now:

  • Share songs from Apple Music and Spotify directly to WhatsApp Status.
  • Annotate and highlight PDF documents on WhatsApp Web and Desktop without downloading them first.
  • Access enhanced messaging capabilities through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, including reading and replying to messages, viewing call history, and accessing favourite contacts while driving.

These additions further expand WhatsApp’s role beyond messaging into a broader communication and productivity platform.

WhatsApp Continues to Expand Its Ecosystem

The latest update follows a series of recent product launches by Meta.

In recent months, WhatsApp introduced usernames, allowing users to connect without sharing their phone numbers, while also enabling username reservations to reduce impersonation risks.

The company has also rolled out a premium subscription offering additional features such as profile customisation, enhanced reactions, and advanced status insights.

Together, these updates underscore Meta’s strategy of evolving WhatsApp into a comprehensive communications platform that serves individuals, businesses, and creators across multiple devices.
