Vodacom Lesotho Marks 30 Years of Driving National Connectivity and Growth

Vodacom Lesotho has commemorated 30 years of operations, highlighting its role in expanding connectivity and supporting economic development across the country.

Launched in 1996 as the first mobile network operator in Lesotho, the company has grown from a single portable base station to a nationwide network of over 420 base stations, now covering approximately 98% of the population. Over the same period, internet penetration in the country has reached about 68%, reflecting one of the highest and most affordable access levels in the local market. The company’s operations have also contributed to employment, with more than 300 direct jobs and thousands of indirect roles supported through its ecosystem.

Vodacom Lesotho stated that its infrastructure investments have played a key role in enabling digital transformation across sectors such as banking, retail, manufacturing, and public services. Improved connectivity has supported government digitization efforts and expanded access to information and economic opportunities, particularly in remote areas.

Speaking on the milestone, Shameel Joosub emphasized the importance of sustained investment in digital infrastructure, describing it as a critical driver of social and economic progress across Africa. The company also highlighted its social impact initiatives through the Vodacom Lesotho Foundation, which focuses on education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and community development.

Looking ahead, Vodacom Lesotho reaffirmed its commitment to expanding digital and financial inclusion, as well as strengthening infrastructure to support long-term national growth and a more connected society.
