MTN Group has reinforced its position as a leader in inclusive economic development after spending $1.25 billion (R20.4 billion) with black-owned suppliers in 2025, securing its Level 1 Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) status.
The milestone marks the sixth consecutive year the group has maintained the highest B-BBEE rating, while its South African operations extend the streak to seven years. The achievement reflects MTN’s long-term strategy to align commercial success with societal impact in one of Africa’s most regulated and transformation-focused markets.
South Africa’s Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) framework is designed to address historical inequalities by promoting inclusive participation across ownership, skills development, and enterprise growth. For corporates, compliance is not only a regulatory expectation but also a reputational and operational imperative.
MTN’s latest performance underscores a deliberate investment in supplier diversity and enterprise development, with spending directed toward black-owned businesses across its value chain. The company also reported strong outcomes in skills development and socio-economic initiatives, reinforcing its broader transformation agenda.
Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita emphasized the strategic alignment between business growth and community impact, noting that sustained Level 1 status reflects MTN’s commitment to shared value creation.
Beyond compliance, the telecom giant continues to position itself as a catalyst for digital and financial inclusion. Its initiatives span expanding connectivity, supporting small businesses, and enabling broader economic participation across South Africa and other African markets.
As regulatory scrutiny and stakeholder expectations increase, MTN’s continued top-tier ranking signals not just adherence, but a competitive advantage rooted in inclusive growth and long-term resilience.
