Meta, FG launch AI Academy Nigeria with $5,000 startup prizes.

Meta has launched AI Academy Nigeria in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN).

The programme is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s growing AI talent pipeline by giving developers, startups, students and early-career professionals access to practical AI training, technical support and startup opportunities.

The initiative will run through three major tracks: AI Skills Development, a Startup Pitchathon and a Developer Bootcamp.

Three tracks, one AI talent pipeline

The AI Skills Development track is open to members of the 3MTT community and provides free courses covering generative AI fundamentals and application development using Meta’s AI models.

Courses will be delivered through platforms including Coursera, DeepLearning.AI and DataCamp, with topics such as building generative AI applications with Llama, prompt engineering and using generative AI for social media marketing.

The top 100 performers will be eligible for scholarships towards paid Meta Blueprint certifications and up to $5,000 in advertising credits.

Nigerian startups can pitch for $5,000

The Startup Pitchathon is targeted at early-stage Nigerian startups building with Meta’s AI technologies.

Applications close on August 21, after which 10 startups will be selected to pitch at GITEX Nigeria on September 3.

Two winning startups will each receive:

  • $5,000 in cash funding
  • $2,000 in Meta advertising credits
  • An all-expenses-paid trip to Istanbul, Türkiye
  • An opportunity to pitch at Meta’s AI Summit on November 23–24

The pitchathon creates a direct link between AI skills development and access to funding, giving Nigerian founders an opportunity to move beyond learning and build commercially viable solutions.

Developer Bootcamp targets hands-on AI skills

The third track, the Developer Bootcamp, will be delivered by RAIN over six weeks.

Selected participants will receive hands-on AI development training, technical guidance and access to Meta’s AI experts.

The focus is on helping developers move from understanding AI concepts to actually building AI-powered applications.

Why the partnership matters

Nigeria has one of Africa’s largest pools of young digital talent, but access to advanced technical training, funding and global technology networks remains a major challenge for many developers and startups.

AI Academy Nigeria attempts to address those gaps by bringing training, technical expertise, entrepreneurship and funding into one programme.

Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, said the partnership would help equip Nigerian developers, entrepreneurs and young professionals with practical AI skills while creating pathways for startups to compete globally.

For Meta, the programme also provides an opportunity to expand the adoption of its AI technologies among Nigerian developers and businesses.

The initiative builds on the Federal Government’s 3MTT programme, which is focused on developing Nigeria’s technical talent pipeline and connecting skills development with opportunities in the digital economy.

If successfully implemented, AI Academy Nigeria could help move more Nigerian AI talent from simply learning about artificial intelligence to building products, launching businesses and competing in global markets.

What Nigerian founders should know

The most immediate opportunity is the Startup Pitchathon, but applicants should pay attention to the August 21 deadline.

For developers and 3MTT fellows, the skills-development and bootcamp tracks provide another route into Nigeria’s expanding AI ecosystem.

Nigeria’s AI race is no longer just about having talented people. It is increasingly about giving that talent the skills, funding and infrastructure to build.
