Ghana is taking a significant step towards embedding digital skills directly into higher education, with the government partnering with 11 universities to integrate certifications from the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP) into degree and diploma programmes.
The initiative is designed to bridge the gap between traditional academic qualifications and the practical technology skills increasingly demanded by employers. Participating institutions include the University of Ghana, KNUST, the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Ghana Communication Technology University and the University of Cape Coast, among others.
Implementation is already underway at some universities. At KNUST, more than 1,000 students have enrolled in the programme, while cybersecurity has emerged as the most popular area of study across the initiative, followed by data analytics, artificial intelligence and project management.
The move reflects a broader effort to make university graduates more prepared for a rapidly changing digital economy. Ghana’s One Million Coders Programme aims to equip one million citizens with technology and digital skills, with the integration into universities potentially expanding its reach significantly.
