Liberia is taking steps to modernise its telecommunications regulatory system as the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) moves to automate the licensing and renewal process.
The planned digital platform will allow individuals, businesses and other entities to submit applications for telecommunications licences and renewals online. The move is expected to reduce the time, cost and physical effort associated with the current process, particularly for applicants based outside the capital, Monrovia.
Under the existing system, applicants may need to travel to Monrovia to complete licensing procedures. The new platform is being developed to replace these paper-based processes with a more streamlined digital system.
The LTA’s Licensing and Regulations Department is currently refining the platform, while staff are being trained to manage applications and related regulatory processes digitally.
Beyond improving convenience for applicants, the initiative could also strengthen the efficiency of Liberia’s telecom regulatory operations by creating a more centralised and accessible licensing process.
However, the LTA says the transition will not eliminate physical access. Applicants who require assistance or prefer to engage directly with the Authority will still be able to access in-person services. This hybrid approach is intended to prevent the digital transition from excluding people with limited access to online services.
The initiative reflects Liberia’s broader push toward digitalising public-sector services and modernising telecommunications regulation. By moving licensing processes online while retaining physical support, the LTA is seeking to make regulatory services more accessible across the country.
