Airtel Kenya has announced the appointment of Djibril Tobe as its new Managing Director, marking a leadership transition for one of Kenya’s largest telecommunications operators as it seeks to strengthen its position in the country’s highly competitive telecom market.
Tobe succeeds Ashish Malhotra, who led Airtel Kenya for the past four years and is moving on to become Chief Executive Officer of Indus Towers Africa. The appointment was approved by the Board of Airtel Networks Kenya Limited and takes effect immediately.
The new Managing Director brings more than two decades of experience spanning telecommunications, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and consulting across several African markets. Throughout his career, Tobe has built a reputation for driving business transformation, operational efficiency, and commercial growth in emerging markets.
Prior to his appointment in Kenya, Tobe served as Managing Director of Airtel Congo B, a role he held since 2023. He has also led Airtel Chad as Managing Director and previously served as Commercial Director at Airtel Burkina Faso. Before joining Airtel’s leadership ranks, he held executive positions at Expresso Guinea, Ernst & Young, and Coca-Cola, giving him a diverse background across both telecommunications and consumer-facing industries.
His appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Airtel Kenya. The operator has expanded its network footprint, grown its customer base, and strengthened its challenge to market leader Safaricom in recent years. Industry observers see Tobe’s extensive experience across African telecom markets as an asset as Airtel continues to pursue growth opportunities in data services, mobile money, and digital connectivity.
The leadership change also reflects Airtel Africa’s broader strategy of leveraging experienced executives from within its regional operations to drive growth across key markets. Tobe’s deep understanding of African telecommunications dynamics is expected to support Airtel Kenya’s next phase of expansion and innovation.
As Kenya’s digital economy continues to evolve, Airtel Kenya’s new leadership will face the challenge of accelerating customer acquisition, expanding financial inclusion through mobile services, and competing in one of Africa’s most advanced telecommunications markets. With a proven track record across multiple countries, Djibril Tobe now takes on the task of steering Airtel Kenya through its next chapter of growth.
