MTN Nigeria has announced the migration of its Home Broadband and FibreX service short codes from a three-digit format to five digits, aligning with the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) ongoing shortcode harmonisation policy.
The telecom operator notified customers via SMS that the new USSD codes will take effect from June 30, 2026, with no changes to the underlying broadband services.
Under the new numbering structure:
- 461 becomes 49061 for checking service availability, purchasing, and managing FibreX and unlimited broadband plans.
- 217, previously used for customer support, changes to 49117.
According to MTN, the migration is purely a numbering update and will not affect customers’ existing broadband subscriptions or service experience.
Part of NCC’s National Shortcode Harmonisation Initiative
The migration forms part of MTN Nigeria’s compliance with the NCC’s shortcode restructuring framework introduced in 2023.
The regulator directed mobile network operators to standardise essential three-digit USSD codes across all networks, allowing subscribers to access core services—such as airtime balance checks, data purchases, and customer care—using the same codes regardless of whether they use MTN, Airtel, Globacom, or 9mobile.
At the same time, the NCC instructed operators to migrate non-essential customer care lines and value-added service (VAS) codes to four- or five-digit formats under its Guidelines on Shortcode Operation in Nigeria (2023).
The revised numbering system is designed to improve service classification, simplify regulation, and reduce customer confusion around premium and subscription-based services.
Why the Changes Matter
The new four- and five-digit shortcode structure allows the NCC to distinguish between different categories of digital services based on their function and pricing.
These include broadband services, premium SMS offerings, caller tunes, lotteries, betting platforms, devotional content, sports alerts, and other value-added services.
Unlike essential three-digit service codes, some VAS shortcodes attract daily or weekly subscription charges. The harmonised numbering system is intended to improve transparency and reduce instances of accidental billing.
Telecom Operators Continue Nationwide Migration
MTN is not the only operator implementing the new numbering framework.
Since the NCC directive was introduced, telecom providers have progressively migrated legacy short codes to the approved bands.
MTN has already transferred several services—including news alerts, financial information services, promotional campaigns, and its Farm Direct agricultural platform—to five-digit codes.
Other operators have also updated their services.
Airtel Nigeria now manages premium ringback tunes through 60600, while mobile number portability requests are initiated by texting PORT to 60000.
Globacom has similarly moved several promotional campaigns and premium messaging services to five-digit codes such as 55011, 50010, and 35120 for selected content providers.
The latest migration reflects the telecommunications industry’s continued alignment with regulatory efforts to standardise digital service delivery across Nigeria.
While customers will need to update the short codes they use to access MTN FibreX and broadband services, the transition is expected to improve consistency across networks and create clearer distinctions between free telecom services and premium value-added offerings.
As operators continue implementing the NCC’s shortcode framework, subscribers can expect more services to migrate to the new numbering structure in the coming months.
